I’ve got a dusty, messy job, but it completely transforms the space when I’m done. A floor installer visualizes the space and installs carpet, hardwood, linoleum and vinyl to protect and beautify a room.
Here are some of the skills you need:
- Visualize spaces accurately to estimate materials
- Have good time and task management
- Good with numbers and measuring
Imagination and physical strength go hand-in-hand for this trade, as they must envision the space and estimate the materials needed before doing the heavy lifting and installing of the chosen flooring.

What are the training or certification requirements?
A three- to four-year apprenticeship program, or a combination of more than four years of work experience in the trade and some high school, college or industry courses.
