Hi! I’m a Bricklayer
One of the original homebuilding trades, as a bricklayer, I am on site to build or repair walls, arches, chimneys and fireplaces using bricks, stone and other similar materials.
Here are some of the skills you need:
- Understanding of planning and engineering documents
- Estimating and measuring
- Job task management
- Good problem solving
Bricklayers are usually in good shape because they are often outside, using balance to work with heaving equipment and materials on narrow platforms or scaffolds and using their hands to build walls and features in a safe way.
This trade also needs to have an artistic eye and the ability to read plans, recognize patterns and proportions. There are many construction companies who hire bricklaying contractors and there is an opportunity to be self-employed, enjoying flexible hours and a great salary.

What are the training or certification requirements?
Completion of secondary school is usually required, as well as a three to four-year apprenticeship program, to be eligible for certification. Trade certification isn’t required in BC but it helps increase job opportunities.

The mid-range average salary is $72,800 and the high range is $86,340.
